TMSAA Girls' Wrestling Regulations

I. GENERAL REGULATIONS

  1. TMSAA schools shall be divided into four sections for girls' wrestling postseason competition.

  2. Videotaping or filming is permitted if the taping or filming is for private use or use by the two schools involved and not for public or commercial use. All taping or filming by a school may be approved by the local Game Director, and the Game Director shall assign space, when available, from which the school may tape or film. Persons filming from the corner in an Individual tournament shall count towards the two-person limit in the corner as specified in NFHS rules.

  3. It is recommended that during the regular season, no air horns, cowbells, or individual-type noisemakers be allowed.

  4. A Medical Doctor (M.D.), Osteopathic Physician (D.O.), Certified Nurse Practitioner, or Physicians Assistant may be used to sign the NFHS Medical Release for wrestlers to participate with skin lesions. They may also be used as designated, on-site meet appropriate health care professionals who have the authority to overrule the diagnosis of the appropriate health care professional who has signed the medical release form for a wrestler to participate or not participate with a particular skin condition as stated in NFHS Rule 4-2-4.

  5. There shall be 13 weight classes for TMSAA postseason events: 75, 84, 93, 100, 107, 114, 121, 128, 135, 145, 155, 180, 225

  6. All championship round matches for Girls' Wrestling Area, Sectional, and State Championship events shall consist of three 2-minute periods (2-2-2). All consolation round matches shall consist of a 1-minute first period followed by two 2-minute periods (1-2-2). Overtime matches shall consist of one 1-minute period followed by two 30-second tiebreakers, if necessary, and one 30-second ultimate tiebreaker, if necessary.

II. SECTIONAL QUALIFYING TOURNAMENTS

  1. Selection of a tournament site, employment of officials, financial arrangements, and other plans for conducting the sectional tournaments shall be made by representatives of the schools in the section.

  2. The sectional tournament must be completed by Saturday of NFHS Week 22 (December 7, 2024).

  3. Schools may only enter one wrestler per weight class into the sectional tournament.

  4. Wrestlers that finish 1st and 2nd in their sectional tournament shall advance to the state tournament. The two wrestlers competing in the finals match shall be the 1st and 2nd place finishers. "True 2nd" will not be an option. It is recommended that each section place up to 4 wrestlers. In the event that one section has fewer than 2 medalists, wrestlers who finish third or fourth from the corresponding sectional tournament will be used to fill the state tournament bracket in the place of a section’s vacant position(s).

III. STATE TOURNAMENT

  1. Girls who have competed against or accepted a forfeit from boys during the regular season at any level of competition (Varsity, JV, or Exhibition) WILL be eligible for the TMSAA Girls' Wrestling State Championships. Girls wishing to compete must be on their school’s eligibility list.

  2. Wrestlers who meet the qualification shall be placed in each weight division in the state tournament. Each sectional champion shall be matched with a runner-up from another section in the opening round.

IV. SKIN CHECKS

  1. Before the individual meet begins, the official shall perform skin checks or verify skin checks have been performed by an appropriate health care professional. Coaches may conduct weigh-ins, but cannot conduct skin checks to clear athletes for competition.

  2. Authorized to Perform Skin Checks: Physician (MD, DO), Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, or Certified Athletic Trainer. The decision on whether to use an appropriate health care professional or the referee for skin checks shall lie with the school hosting the event.

  3. The official or Certified Athletic Trainer performing skin checks shall not disqualify a wrestler if the NFHS Skin Release Form is properly completed by a Physician (MD, DO), Nurse Practitioner, or Physician Assistant

V. GENERAL TOURNAMENT REGULATIONS

No air horns, cowbells, or individual-type noisemakers will be allowed at sectional and state tournaments. The Executive Director has the authority to select another site if the host’s facilities or tournament management system is not adequate to host a state qualifying event.

VI. OFFICIALS

State tournament officials shall be selected by the TMSAA state office.
